When commissioned to paint a special scene for the ‘Bolo Húngaro’ factory in Visconde de Mauá, the dining room bay window was the chosen subject with the table set for tea. On the window sill there happened to be a couple of papier maché gnomes with mountains behind them in the distance. When the painting was ready to be photographed there were also some other landscape paintings in the studio, and at a certain point the gnome couple just decided to jump into these paintings as well. I believe that these little people inhabit the forest, and simply couldn’t resist the temptation of going back to nature in these pictures as well. So they became the protagonists of a big campaign to save our planet, which in turn became the leitmotif of the whole series of gnome paintings in Mauá
The Gnomes of Visconde de Mauá implore the World … Preserve Flora & Fauna … Stop polluting the Waters of our planet … and recycle your waste please !!
